A beautiful day for buckthorn cutting

Youth from Quest4Earth helped clear buckthorn at Harbert Park

Sunshine raised spirits at the last buckthorn clearing of the season yesterday, as more than 40 volunteers pitched in to clear a large section of the Harbert Park woods.

This group from Quest4Earth, a Saturday STEM program, has been learning about migratory birds and habitat restoration. We were thrilled to have them working alongside our regular volunteer crew. Boy Scouts from troops 922 and 924 and a group of Allstate employees pitched in, too, and the result was a very long pile of brush for the city crew to put through the chipper on Monday. We are all looking forward to planting native shrubs and wildflowers in the openings as we work to raise the quality of bird habitat here.  Clearing buckthorn in Harbert Park
